The Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, was well worth the visit on our recent quick trip to New Zealand. I couldn't absorb everything in the museum so this review gives my impressions of the small part of the museum that I spent most of my time in. It is about a fragments of Maori history. Continue reading →

This was happening to me so I thought I should pause, reflect on the hectic month that has been and share with you some of the things I have done.
In the lead up to Anzac Day, the Australian and New Zealand commemoration of war, I am reading war histories. Rosalie Triolo's has taken an interesting approach to her history of World War I. In 'Our Schools and the War' she looks at the War in terms of community. He book explores the role played by the boys and girls, women and men of the Victorian Education Department in Australia. This history looks at teacher-soldiers on the battle-fields as well as the fundraising and 'comforts' making of the students, teachers and parents at home. Continue reading →

An exhibition at the National Library of Australia has prompted me to explore the history of the design of Canberra and the work of Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Griffin. The Griffins were a couple with foresight who strived to develop town plans and buildings that would enhance community life and embrace the natural environment. While learning more about the Griffins I found some great resources on the internet which helped me to learn more about a suburb near me here in Sydney. Continue reading →

It is New Year to people around the world including me. In this post I share three books I read over the last nineteen days. All were written by Australian authors and all were about various aspects of the Baha'i principle of equality between women and men. The books cover the Baha'i teachings on the equality between women and men, the life of the daughter of the prophet-founder of the Baha'i Faith who went on to have a significant formal role in the Faith during the early twentieth century. The third book is a family history of Baha'is who first encountered the Faith in Adelaide in the early 1930s.

This is not a conventional book review, rather I read these books to reflect on my own actions and attitudes concerning the equality of women and men. Continue reading →

The participation of girls in maths during their final year of school in New South Wales has declined significantly in ten years. An education researcher has noted that attitudes regarding girls being bad at maths were partly to blame.

In this post I share the story of one woman growing up in country Australia during the 1950s and her determination to study maths and science at university. She had to overcome many barriers that could have easily led her to give up on her dream.

She was not brilliant. You won't have heard of her. However, I found her story inspiring.

I believe that it is important that the stories of ordinary women working in maths, science and technology should be told. Continue reading →

Australia is a dry continent that suffers from periodic flooding. Emily O'Gorman's new book, Flood Country, examines the history of flooding in the Murray-Darling Basin in eastern Australia. Covering four states this enormous network of rivers is in parched country but at times swells into an enormous moving inland lake. Continue reading →

This is a short post about the reviewing of histories, biographies and memoirs for the Australian Women Writers' Challenge so far in 2013. Histories and biographies are not receiving much attention. If you have read some good histories and biographies written by Australian women, read this post to find out how to support these authors and publicise their work. Continue reading →
